Tales of the Gold Monkey: Complete Series

Tales of the Gold Monkey: Complete Series

Action, advernture, international intrigue, and exotic ambiance combine in Tales Of The Gold Monkey. This 22-hour long series is set in a backwater corner of the South Pacific a young American adventurer, Jake Cutter, and his ragtag group of friends become involved in death-defying hi-jinx, transporting people-on-the-run in a well-worn Grumman Goose seaplane. Broadcast by ABC in early 80s, the series became a massive hit following in the wake of Raiders of The Lost Ark . Set in 1938, this series captures the ambiance and character of a mysterious romantic era.

Stephen Collins heroically tries to keep up with the (Indiana) Joneses as rakishly charming soldier of misfortune Jake Cutter, who works as a pilot for hire on the South Pacific island of Boragora in 1938. Comparisons with Raiders of the Lost Ark are inevitable, but according to the series retrospective included as a bonus feature on this six-disc set, producer Don Bellisario (Quantum Leap, Magnum P.I., and NCIS) pitched this to the networks before Indy ever cracked his whip. It was only after Raiders became such a colossal hit that ABC saw gold in Monkey. Alas, this series never really took off, but nearly 30 years later, it's a grandly entertaining bit of escapist fare that packs old Hollywood Saturday matinee thrills and adventure into every episode. The colorful characters include Corky (Jeff Mackay), Jake's trusty (when he's not drunk) mechanic and sidekick; Bon Chance Louie (the peerless Roddy McDowall), the ethically questionable French liaison and governor, and owner of the disreputable hangout the Monkey Bar; and Sarah Stickney White (Caitlin O'Hearney), chanteuse and spy. Stealing nearly every scene he's in is Jack, Jake's one-eyed dog, always good for a comical cutaway. You can't beat the Nazis for villainy (check out John Hillerman's outrageous accent in the feature-length pilot episode), but Monkey steps over the PC line with deadly dragon lady Koji (Marta Du Bois) and her samurai henchman. These Tales are told mostly tongue-in-cheek. Expensive for its day, the series nevertheless has a B-movie look, which enhances its hokey charms. In addition to the newly filmed interviews with cast and creators, the bonus features include five immersive audio commentaries, as well as detailed character bios and a series "fact file." Virtually unseen since its original broadcast, Tales of the Gold Monkey is of more than nostalgic interest. Stephen Collins fans will surely be in--wait for it--7th Heaven. --Donald Liebenson ...Read more

The Adventures of Young Indiana Jones, Volume Two - The War Years

The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles was based on the Indiana Jones series of films. The series follows the Indiana Jones character (as a young boy and as a young man) as he was growing up and experiencing his early adventures, where he gets into trouble, learns life lessons and encounters various historical figures along the way. George Lucas’ The Adventures of Young Indiana Jones: Volume Two, The War Years continues the extraordinary narrative, historical, and production achievements found in Volume One. As with the first series, each feature-length program (re-editing material from the original, one-hour broadcasts to smooth out the chronology of Jones’ experiences as a child and young man) resembles a theatrical experience more than episodic television. Each drama is remarkably rich in layered detail, shedding light on major events, figures, and ideas from a pivotal era in world history. Where Volume One largely focused on the early childhood of Indiana Jones as he traveled the world in the company of his parents, meeting the likes of Picasso, Tolstoy, Freud, and T.E. Lawrence, Volume Two is exclusively concerned with Jones’ experiences during World War I. This time, Jones (Sean Patrick Flanery, introduced in the final episodes of Volume One) is serving in the infantry of the Belgian army under an assumed name, eventually rising in rank from corporal to captain and becoming a spy after paying extensive, nightmarish dues on the war’s front line in Europe. The series captures some of the horror of World War I’s most infamous battles, directly inserting Jones into the thick of the action at Verdun, the Somme, the Middle East, and elsewhere. In time, Jones is repeatedly recruited to become a secret agent, going undercover in Austria to help forge a separate peace between the last Habsburg emperor and the allies, and playing a crucial part in the survival of British and Australian forces crossing a merciless desert. Along the way, Indy befriends Bolsheviks preparing for the Russian Revolution, has a romance with Mata Hari, attempts a prison break with Charles de Gaulle, and has a wonderful encounter with Albert Schweitzer. As with Volume One, this follow-up box set includes an astonishing number of excellent special features, primarily dynamic documentaries about many of the real-life people and incidents introduced in the stories. These extras provide much depth and analysis without being at all dry; a creative history teacher would do well to incorporate them (and, for that matter, the shows themselves) in a class about the 20th century. --Tom Keogh ...Read more

It’s funny that Indiana Jones never bumped into any of his famous former acquaintances during his three globetrotting big screen adventures. In these final episodes from George Lucas’ ambitious edutainment TV series, Indy (Robert Sean Leonard) hobnobs with all manner of 20th-century icons and notables. Among his exploits: serving as translator at the 1919 Paris Peace Conference, helping Professor Robert Goddard with his liquid-fueled rocket experiments; jamming on tenor sax with Sidney Bechet; beating up bigots alongside his buddy Paul Robeson; busting bootleggers with Ernest Hemingway and classmate Elliot Ness, doing stuntwork for director John Ford; and trading quips with Alexander Wolcott, Dorothy Parker and the other wits of the Algonquin Round Table. If any names or events are unfamiliar, there’s no need to log ont o Wikipedia. Each episode is enhanced by an impressive array of handsomely produced biographical profiles and background docs that feature some A-list talent (Martin Scorsese appears in the featurette devoted to Ford). Enlightening, yes, but for those who prefer their Indy old school will thrill to the episode "Treasure of the Peacock’s Eye"--the most Raiders-like in this collection--in which a treasure map found on a dying man leads Indy on a search for a priceless gold statue once in the possession of Alexander the Great. Plus, it’s got pirates! The episode, "Masks of Evil" finds Indy against a modern-day (1918 to be exact) Vlad the Impaler. Best of all, Harrison Ford himself, appearing as the grown-up Indy, kicks off "Mystery of the Blues" on an exciting note, being relentlessly pursued for a Native-American artifact in his possession. Other episodes are amusing trifles. In "Scandal of 1920," a lovelorn Indy juggles the affections of three women (including a free-thinking critic portrayed by Anne Heche) while toiling backstage at a Broadway musical. Suffice to say, it’s more fun to watch Indy battle an army of the undead than it is to see him get romantic advice from George Gershwin and Irving Berlin, or, in the episode, "Hollywood Follies," tangle with temperamental director Eric von Stroheim. As with the previous two Young Indiana Jones sets, each feature-length program is comprised of two re-edited original broadcast episodes that chronologically carry on Indy’s extraordinary saga. With Indy back after a 19-year absence in Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, this value-packed box set is an excellent way--especially for a new generation of fans--to keep up with the Joneses. --Donald Liebenson ...Read more

************************************

The trailer that begins each of the three DVDs is indication enough that the release of Indiana Jones: The Adventure Collection, a boxed set of the original trilogy of blockbuster adventure films concocted by director Steven Spielberg and executive producer-story writer George Lucas, was timed to coincide with the May 2008 theatrical release of the long-awaited fourth installment, Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. Whether that’s a crass marketing ploy or simply good business is hardly the point, because considering the quality of the movies (in a word, they’re good), the affordable price, and especially the raft of new special features accompanying the set, there’s enough here to make this an appealing purchase for those who don’t already own them and a tempting one for those who do.

The first of the three films, Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981), is also the best, a certified classic loaded with non-stop action, grand spectacle, a hero for the ages (played by Harrison Ford), a beautiful love interest, humor, horror, and a potent storyline that brings together a profound religious-archaeological icon (the Ark of the Covenant, nothing less than "a radio for speaking to God") and the 20th century’s most infamous villains (the Nazis). Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom (1984), the second entry, is generally considered the weakest of the lot--certainly it is the most dark and disturbing--but it’s still very entertaining, while The Last Crusade (1989) is closer to Raiders in many respects, with fine acting contributions from River Phoenix (as the teenage Indy) and Sean Connery (as Indy’s father), a strong James Bond-type feel, and the return of the Nazis, who this time are competing for another antiquity of incalculable value and significance (the Holy Grail). Although the collection is missing the extra bonus disc (with a two-hour "making of" documentary) that accompanied the 2003 DVD issue of the films, all three discs include new and insightful introductions by Spielberg and Lucas; there are also storyboards from various scenes and photo galleries on each disc. Among the best of the other features are "The Creepy Crawlies" (about the thousands of snakes, bugs, rats and other scary critters that populate the trilogy), "Travels with Indy" (a look at some of the exotic locations where the movies were filmed), "Indy’s Women" (a candid discussion with leading ladies Karen Allen, Kate Capshaw, and Alison Doody), and a behind-the-scenes detailing of the "melting face" effect seen in Raiders' thrilling ark-opening scene. --Sam Graham ...Read more
