The trailer that begins each of the three DVDs is indication enough that the release of Indiana Jones: The Adventure Collection, a boxed set of the original trilogy of blockbuster adventure films concocted by director Steven Spielberg and executive producer-story writer George Lucas, was timed to coincide with the May 2008 theatrical release of the long-awaited fourth installment, Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. Whether that’s a crass marketing ploy or simply good business is hardly the point, because considering the quality of the movies (in a word, they’re good), the affordable price, and especially the raft of new special features accompanying the set, there’s enough here to make this an appealing purchase for those who don’t already own them and a tempting one for those who do.

The first of the three films, Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981), is also the best, a certified classic loaded with non-stop action, grand spectacle, a hero for the ages (played by Harrison Ford), a beautiful love interest, humor, horror, and a potent storyline that brings together a profound religious-archaeological icon (the Ark of the Covenant, nothing less than "a radio for speaking to God") and the 20th century’s most infamous villains (the Nazis). Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom (1984), the second entry, is generally considered the weakest of the lot--certainly it is the most dark and disturbing--but it’s still very entertaining, while The Last Crusade (1989) is closer to Raiders in many respects, with fine acting contributions from River Phoenix (as the teenage Indy) and Sean Connery (as Indy’s father), a strong James Bond-type feel, and the return of the Nazis, who this time are competing for another antiquity of incalculable value and significance (the Holy Grail). Although the collection is missing the extra bonus disc (with a two-hour "making of" documentary) that accompanied the 2003 DVD issue of the films, all three discs include new and insightful introductions by Spielberg and Lucas; there are also storyboards from various scenes and photo galleries on each disc. When I originally bought this set, it was transfered in an aspect ratio that is now out of date. And now all three films have come out in the true widescreen format that have brought these three great movies into the 21st television century. It is worth the upgrade.

This is another example of George Lucas getting lost in his own head and ruining a perfect, simple action franchise. The straightforward, world-traveling exploits of Dr. Jones are gone. In their stead is a movie with bland settings, meaningless fights, bad CG, and a leading man who seems like he's delivering his lines at gunpoint.

If you love the Indy franchise, and somehow managed not to see this one yet, do yourself a favor: pretend it doesn't exist.

Excellent movie with great packaging : Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull (2-Disc Widescreen Set) (Limited Edition Gift Set with Mini Crystal Skull Replica and Base + Dollar Sideshow Toys Gift Card) (2008)

I really like the packaging. The Photo Book is inside a nice cardboard sleeve, and it pulls out from the left side. The book is a good quality hard cover with a plastic tray for the two discs. The tray is located inside the left hand cover, and on the right is the 80 page Photographic Chronicle with pictures taken by Unit Photographer David James.

There is also a preface by Steven Spielberg, where he talks about the importance of Still Photography on the set of a movie, a forward by Harrison Ford, and an introduction by David James.

The photos in the book are really nice. Included are shots of scenes from the movie, production shots, promotional shots, etc. Every chapter begins with a brief description by David James about what was being shot and some facts about the films production

VIDEO & AUDIO:

"Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull" is featured in 1080p High Definition and right off the bat, this film looks incredibly gorgeous on Blu-ray. The film sports vibrant colors, detail is just amazingly clear, everything about the film showcases detail. May it be the surroundings of the Mayan jungle, the skeletons, the clothing, the people... You name it, detail is clear and the transfer is just amazing. Definitely one of the best looking Blu-ray video transfers among the many Blu-ray releases of 2008!

As for audio, audio is presented in Dolby TrueHD 5.1. and the lossless track is just as equally incredible compared to the picture quality. With the number of action sequences included in "Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull", audio is immersive as front channels showcase the action sequences and musical score, center channel showcases the dialogue which is nice and clear. LFE showcases the booms from the many explosions seen in the film and gunshots and vehicles whizzing and featured through the surrounds are also in abundance.

Personally, for a film of this caliber, I was not expecting anything less than magnificent for picture and audio quality and Paramount delivers with this awesome Blu-ray release. Audio and Videophiles should definitely be happy with this Blu-ray release.

As for subtitles, the film is featured in English, English SDH, French, Spanish and Portuguese.

SPECIAL FEATURES:

If you thought picture and audio quality was fantastic, "Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull" is loaded with special features. Special features can be found on both discs. Here is what is included:
